  John Keats’s Ode to a Nightingale is one of his great odes which was written and published in 1819. The poem portrays the ideal world of the nightingale and represents the immortal beauty of its song. This ode is a reflection of Keats’s psyche as he uses the power of imagination to escape his painful reality and leave behind the real world and “fly away” to the dreamy world of the nightingale. Through close analysis of this ode, this study aims to elaborate on the power of imagination in Keats’s poetry. In addition, the study highlights the impact of Keats’s psychological state and how his life struggles were unconsciously presented in his poetry. The psychoanalytic school of criticism and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of anxiety and defence mechanisms are adopted as a lens to discuss Ode to a Nightingale from a psychoanalytic perspective. However, the study leads to the interpretation of Keats’s unconscious modification of imagination and how that helped him to reach the state of escapism and reduce the anxiety provoked by his distressed past experiences.
