The Department of Home Economics is considered one of the departments included in the College of Agriculture. It was established based on the great role played by the family, which is considered the first nucleus in Libyan society. It was opened in the year 1979 AD to join the total departments in the College of Agriculture. At the beginning of its establishment, it was a division affiliated with the Department of Economics. The agricultural economics department began with only seven female students, then it became independent from the Agricultural Economics Department in the academic year 1982 AD to become an independent department. Then the number of registered female students began to increase. Specializing in home economics, the Department of Home Economics contributes to preparing people and providing developmental services to society by providing educational and pedagogical services and activities related to the various fields of the department (lunch and nutrition, textile and clothing, housing and home management, education and guidance, children and family relations).

The department submitted a proposal to change the name from the Department of Home Economics to the Department of Applied Human Sciences, with an amendment to its study program in line with the labor market and the development of science, and to make it available for study by both genders, as the current name of the department is a reason for students’ reluctance to study in it. Also, many proposals were presented. Memos and proposals to transform the department into an independent college containing many departments that contribute to providing specialized graduates according to the labor market available to us.

The graduate of the department obtains job opportunities that are compatible with the department’s curricula, such as working in the field of nutrition in sanitariums, hotels, and hospitals as a nutritionist. The department’s outputs are also compatible with work in the field of kindergartens, care homes, and others.

Therefore, we hope that you will consider again the possibility of changing the name of the department and the possibility of converting the department to the College of Applied Human Sciences, following the example of Helwan University in the Arab Republic of Egypt and the country of origin of this specialty in the United States of America.
